In a race that needs to be seen to be believed, the twice checked son of Brave Tin Soldier under a brave ride from Keagan De Melo eventually found galloping room to unleash himself against Putchini, fighting the Bezrin gelding to an exciting finish to win by a head.
The Poet, a consistent Bush Hill-bred out of Snippety Snip by Jallad, sold for only R40 000 at the National 2YO Sale and has earned almost R200 000 to date in stakes. Trained by Mark Dixon who has been been in the winners enclosure regularly recently, the handsome five year old entire is owned by racing commentator Mr Trevor and Mrs Robin Denman.
The Poet over the 1400m stretch came off the bend and attempted to get a run on the inside of the rail but was blocked by two horses - Keagan had to check him out and switch him to the centre where he was blocked again which saw De Melo having to switch him out completely for galloping room to the opposite side of the field. The son of Brave Tin Soldier fought hard to the finish for the win in wet conditions at Scottsville.
The Poet has also placed nine times, only out of the money on four occasions. His dam Snippety Snip is by Jallad, in turn out of a Snippets / Habitat mare.
Congratulations to all concerned.
