King's Chapel earned a double on Friday night at Greyville's nightracing meeting, and followed that up with a phenomenal debut second at Scottsville in wet and soft conditions on Sunday afternoon and a place at Flamingo Park by a juvenile Kontiki.
Friday evening began with a courageous victory for the Paul Lafferty-trained Cup King, who fought bravely to the winners line to take victory by a head after being under pressure from the 100m mark.
A very special win for his connections, Mr B C Barnes & Mesdames T R Barnes & B A G Byrnes, it was also a sentimental win for his breeder Mr Steven Purves who was on hand to experience the win. Cup King was sold for just R10 000 at the 2015 KZN Yearling Sale, and to date has placed five times and won, out of the mare Fields Of France by Val De Bois. The three year old gelding has won over R120 000 in stakes.
The next to follow up on the evening was Bush Hill Stud's own Mr Mcsteamy, a son of Miss Andrea by Restructure. Anton Marcus brought the big four year old gelding home to win for the second occasion for owner Mr Richard Fitzgerald and trainer Garth Puller. In addition Mr Mcsteamy has placed five times and relishes the 1000m distance.
Mr Mcsteamy sold for R90 000 at the 2014 KZN Yearling Sale and had earned over R150 000 in stakes to date.
Backworth-bred High Altar (pictured left), a beautiful big daughter of King's Chapel out of Moving On Up came from wide in the wet conditions of a soft track in the late afternoon thunder storm at Scottsville to bolt to second place under Divan Neethling for the Duncan Howells stable.
An impressive debut for the big burly filly which did not allow the less than satisfactory weather conditions to dampen her courage, High Altar is owned in partnership by Mrs Vanashree & Mr Anant Singh, Messrs D C Howells & B Walker & Backworth Stud. She is a half-sister to four winners including Stakes performer Raise The Bar.
Juvenile colt Kontiki placed in his third start at Flamingo Park on Monday. The colt is owned and trained by Mr Leon Erasmus.
Well done to all concerned.
