Toreador on show at the recent Bush Hill Stud Stallion Day
After a great month of July for Toreador with with nine winners in July and nine places, he has continued with five winners so far for the month of August and 11 places, including a Gr1 second place to Rabada in the Premier's Champion Stakes for his speedy son Prospect Strike.
Toreador's speedy filly Lazer Star picked up her sixth win from just eight starts at Turffontein over 1160m on Saturday. The Gr3 Magnolia Handicap winner raced in a Conditions Plate on the turf, which included a high class of field of Gr3 winners' Belong To Me (who placed second), Approval Rating, Tzigane and Deliver The Power, another Gr2 & Gr3 winnings son of Toreador.
The highest Merit Rated of the field at 109, Lazer Star won comfortably by over length under Weichong Marwing for trainer Ormond Ferraris. Lazer Star has only been out of the money once, after finishing second by a neck to Sensible Lover in the Gr3 Three Troikas Stakes.
Warwick Render recently commented at the Bush Hill Stallion Day regarding Toreador: "Everyone needs a banker in racing and there are few that are more reliable than Toreador both in the sales ring and on the track, a fact borne out by how many trainers supported him with their own mares this last season, something which to me speaks volumes on what they see in his progeny on the tracks."
"Not that it has been hard to see for he has enjoyed a wonderful season and not a week, in fact barely a race meeting goes by without him giving someone a return. He certainly has some exciting prospects in the pipeline this season probably headed up by the likes of Prospect Strike and Laser Star. Little wonder he was again one of the most sought after sires at the Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale this year where he once again proved to have one of the best return ratios on his service fee in the country."
More of his progeny to look out of includes the lightly raced four year old gelding Thrust, who won his second start at the Vaal over 1000m last week, after placing on debut on 30 July. He won by almost two lengths, giving the second horse an additional 2kgs beating in weight. Thrust is out of Jallad mare Kiss For Kate.
At the recent National Two Year Old sale, Toreador had a lovely colt sell as Lot 212 for R180 000, and averaged almost R130 000 for each sold. The most successful son of Danehill to stand his stud career in South Africa and one of the best value for money sires in nationally, Toreador stands for a fee of just R15 000 this season.
