KZN's champion sire Kahal(GB)
had a fantastic day at the Vaal on the sand track yesterday, with two of his progeny - The Mouseketeer and Rebel Queen - winning the Riverside Handicap Listed and the Nkosazana Stakes Listed.
In what was a great day overall with six of the eight races won by breeders/progeny from KZN, The Mouseketeer made it his seventh career win taking home the Riverside Handicap Listed by one and a half lengths from Eugenes (Fort Wood) with another of Kahal's produce, Uncle Tommy finishing a gallant third carrying 60kgs, less than three lengths off.
Bred by Warwick and Karin Render, The Mouseketeer is owned by TV Sports personality Neil Andrews and Mr F Diedrechsen and trained by Sean Tarry. Ridden by Fanie Chambers, The Mouseketeer gave 5.5kgs of weight to Eugenes, who was only carrying 54kgs - therefore an impressive victory indeed.
The Mouseketeer's previous wins include the Gr 2 Emerald Cup and Gr 3 August Stakes, as well as being the winner of the KZN Breeders 1600 (now the Million Mile at Greyville) and placing second behind Knock On Wood in the inaugural KZN Breeders Million Mile. He has placed four times in total.
Bush Hill Stud have a three-quarter brother to The Mouseketeer on offer at the upcoming Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale. The colt is Lot 534 named Dr Mouse
, by Mullins Bay
(by Machiavellian as is Kahal) out of Look Sharp by Northern Guest.
Karin Render talks about Lot 534, Dr Mouse: "He is a chestnut colt - a beautiful colt. He has quality, substance and scope and we are really pleased with him. He actually belongs ot the Natal Grooms Co-op so we are selling him on behalf the Co-op which are represented by a number of the KZN Grooms Co-ops. This horse is a lovely size; The Mouseketeer is not a big horse but this horse has got the size, and he is a Mullin's Bay. A very nice colt!"
Look Sharp has certainly been sharp - all three of her runners have been winners - two of them Black Type. They include Lt Jerry Mouse (by Spaceship) - a winner of the East Cape Nursery Listed who also had four other wins, and a daughter of Cataloochee named Penthouse Mouse. She currently has an unraced daughter named Mystical Mouse - a very good-looking dark bay daughter of Miesque's Approval.
Rebel Queen, a full-sister to Uncle Tommy and a half-sister to Equus Champion Sprinter in 2009 and sire Rebel King, won the Nkosazana Stakes Listed over 1450m in dominating fashion by five lengths from Formation.
Trained by Corne Spies and owned by Messrs F N Englezakis & R P Macnab, Rebel Queen was ridden by MJ Odendaal carrying 52kgs. Rebel Queen has now had six wins, (four in her last five starts) and seven places including the recent Bauhinia Handicap Listed.
Kahal who stands at Bush Hill Stud, is currently lying 5th on the National Sires Log as of 24 March (NHRA) and in the current racing season has produced dual Gr 3 winner Festival Of Fire (bred by Mr C J Saunders & Lady C O'Reilly), Dual Listed winner Love Struck, and Gr 3 winner Enchanted Kingdom. Kahal is strongly represented by 39 Lots at the upcoming Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.
A producer of over 50 Stakes winners, some of Kahal's progeny include the likes of Bold Ellinore, Desert Links, Emperor Napoleon, Evening Attire, Art of War (racing in Dubai), Galant Gagnant, Noble Heir, Fisani, Tales of Bravery, Summerhill's 2012 Vodacom Durban July runner-up Smanjemanje, and Chocolicious (recently exported to race at Royal Ascot) - to name but a few.
