My Fellow South Africans: Enos Mafokate

Enos Mafokate, South Africa’s first black show jumper, has always had a deep love for horses. His journey with horses began when he worked as a groom at a horseback riding school while he was still a school boy. As time went on, Mafokate’s passion for horses only grew stronger.

He later found employment at the SPCA, where his love for horses continued to flourish. Mafokate’s dedication and commitment to these animals were truly commendable.

In addition to his achievements in the equestrian world, Mafokate is also the father of the King of Kwaito, Arthur Mafokate.

Mafokate’s dream of owning a horse came true when he purchased his first horse for R700. With this horse, he established a show jumping school in Soweto, a place that he holds dear to his heart.

When asked about his decision to remain in Soweto, Mafokate replied, “I love Soweto and I would not move anywhere else.” Despite facing the challenges of apartheid, he did what he could under those circumstances. Now, he encourages the youth, who have far more opportunities, to seize them with both hands.

In July 2022, Mafokate will lead a group of eight young vaulting riders to Germany. There, he will be honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his remarkable 42 years in equestrian sport. His ultimate goal is to leave a lasting legacy of professional sportsmen and women rooted in Soweto.

The My Fellow South Africans campaign, powered by IOL, aims to foster a more inclusive society by introducing South Africans to one another.
